Orange County Bridge closing June 12-15

HILLSBOROUGH – An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor will close the Orange Grove Bridge over Interstate 40 in Orange County on June 12 for a bridge rehabilitation project.

Crews from Lane Construction Company of Connecticut will reopen the bridge on Monday, June 15 to a single lane of traffic. During the closure, vehicles will detour to New Grady Brown School Road to Dimmocks Mill Road to Eno Mountain Road while the bridge is repaired.

Once one lane is reopened, traffic will remain in a single lane until Saturday, June 27. A temporary traffic signal and highway flaggers will direct traffic through the single lane during the closure.

The bridge closure is part of the 11-mile, $236 million I-40 widening project in Orange County.

Drivers should allow additional time for travel, avoid distracted driving and obey all posted traffic signs while traveling in the area.

Rail Crossing Closures Upcoming in Guilford, Alamance, Orange Counties

IBSONVILLE – Norfolk Southern Railway will temporarily close rail crossings on roads in Guilford, Alamance and Orange counties beginning Monday to install a second railroad track.

Crossings between South English Street in Greensboro and Mt. Hermon Church Road near Durham are expected to intermittently close over the next three weeks.

Norfolk Southern will post signed detours when crossings are closed.

Drivers should plan ahead for delays and follow posted detour signs to avoid the work zones.

Ramp Closure Upcoming in Lee County

6/3/2026 UPDATE: Contract crews have postponed the upcoming closure of the N.C. 87 Business South ramp. ​The closure is now scheduled to begin ​on June 7 at 7 p.m. and end on June 8 at 6 a.m.

UPDATE​: The closure of the N.C. 87 Business South ramp has been rescheduled, and it will now close on June 4 at 7 p.m. and will reopen on June 5 at 6 a.m.

SANFORD – A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation will close the N.C. 87 Business South ramp to N.C. 87 next week for road resurfacing. 

The roadway will close on June 1 at 7 p.m. and will reopen on June 2 at 6 a.m., weather permitting. 

All southbound traffic on N.C. 87 Business will follow a signed detour to take Harvey Faulk Road to return onto N.C. 87 Business. 

Drivers should stay alert in work zones and plan ahead.

NCDOT Contractor to Replace Bridge Near Hillsborough

HILLSBOROUGH – An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor will begin removing and replacing a bridge over the Eno River near Hillsborough next week.

NCDOT crews will close Halls Mill Road and Bane Road starting Monday in Orange County to accommodate construction crews.

This bridge is approaching the end of its service life and has a posted weight limit of only 17 tons per vehicle. The new structure will have no posted weight limit.

In addition, Bane Road will only be closed at the intersection of Hanes Mill Road and Bane Road. The road closure is for the entire six months, beginning Monday morning through Tuesday, Dec. 15. Vehicles will detour to Brookhollow Road, Efland Cedar Grove Road and Highland Farm Road.

Smith-Rowe Construction of Mount Airy earned the $2.5 million contract as the lowest qualified bidder.

Motorists should expect delays and use caution when traveling through work zones.

NCDOT Opens New Section of Chatham Park Way

The N.C. Department of Transportation joins local officials Thursday to snip a ceremonial ribbon before opening a northern segment of Chatham Park Way in Pittsboro.

PITTSBORO – The N.C. Department of Transportation joined local officials Thursday to celebrate the opening of a northern segment of Chatham Park Way.

The new roadway stretches nearly a mile from Suttles Road near the U.S. 64 interchange to Grant Drive. It features two travel lanes in each direction separated by a raised median to improve safety.

Officials from the town of Pittsboro and Chatham County joined NCDOT Division 8 staff for a ribbon cutting Thursday morning to mark the project completion. After the event, the contractor removed the barricades to open the roadway to traffic.

This segment, along with the realignment of Suttles Road with Chatham Park Way, cost about $19 million to construct.

Construction continues on the next 1.5 mile segment from Grant Drive to a future intersection with U.S. 15/501. The $15 million project remains on schedule to be completed and opened to traffic by early fall 2027.

Road Closure Upcoming in Orange County  

 CHAPEL HILL – The N.C. Department of Transportation will temporarily close a stretch of New Hope Church Road next week, weather permitting.  

Beginning April 20 at 5 a.m., crews will close New Hope Church Road where it passes over Interstate 40 to conduct bridge rehabilitation work.  

The road is scheduled to reopen by April 30 at 5 a.m.  

Motorists are encouraged to check DriveNC.gov for real-time traffic updates and utilize the following detours:   

Southbound traffic: Turn left onto N.C. 86, right on Eubanks Road and then right on Hillsborough Road. 

Northbound traffic: Turn right onto Hillsborough Road, left on Eubanks Road and then left on N.C. 86. 

Overnight Closure Scheduled for Orange County Road

CHAPEL HILL – Contractors for the N.C. Department of Transportation will close a section of Millhouse Road near Interstate 40 tomorrow night, weather permitting. 

Starting 11 p.m. on April 9, crews will close a stretch of Millhouse Road to allow crews to safely conduct a deck pour. The road is scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. on April 10. 

A signed detour will be in place directing traffic around the closure via Eubanks Road and N.C. 86.  

Drivers should be mindful of crews working in the area and allow extra time to reach their destination.

Road Closure Scheduled for Orange County

HILLSBOROUGH – Maintenance crews with the N.C. Department of Transportation are scheduled to close Corbett Ridge Road tomorrow, weather permitting.   

Corbett Ridge Road will close to allow crews to safely replace a crossline pipe. The closure will begin March 4 at 8 a.m., and the road is expected to reopen to traffic by 3 p.m. on March 6.

A detour will be in place directing traffic around the closure via Atkins Road.  

Transportation officials remind drivers to plan ahead, be alert to crews in the area and obey all posted traffic signs.

I-85 Ramp Closure Scheduled for Orange County

HILLSBOROUGH – Contractors for the N.C. Department of Transportation will close the exit ramp from Interstate 85 South to I-40 East (Exit 163) next week, weather permitting.  

Beginning Jan. 20 at 4 a.m., crews are set to close the ramp for drainage work. 

The ramp is scheduled to reopen by Jan. 22 at 4 a.m. 

A signed detour will direct traffic to take Exit 161 (U.S. 70 East) and then take the ramp for I-40 East.  

Transportation officials remind drivers to plan ahead, remain alert and obey all posted traffic signs.
