Grants fund traffic safety initiatives in North Carolina

RALEIGH – The North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program is accepting grant applications for projects that address highway safety.

“These grants fund projects that save lives,” said GHSP Director Mark Ezzell. “Everyone has a right to travel safely on North Carolina roads.”

The application period runs from Jan. 1-30, 2026, and funds projects scheduled for the 2027 federal fiscal year (Oct. 1, 2026-Sept. 30, 2027).

These grants support community-based initiatives that align with North Carolina’s highway safety priorities, including:
  • Preventing impaired, distracted and aggressive driving
  • Promoting occupant protection and speeding prevention
  •  Improving safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists and others

“Applicants are evaluated based on crash rates, demographic data, community need and the performance of previous grant recipients,” said Warren Smith, GHSP program director. “Regardless of the type of agency or organization, all applicants share the common goal of reducing traffic fatalities.”

Past grant recipients include law enforcement agencies, local and state governments, hospitals, public health agencies, educational organizations and nonprofits.

Last federal fiscal year, GHSP awarded more than $22 million in grants aimed at reducing crashes, injuries and fatalities on North Carolina roads.

Applicants must first register through the ‘N.C. Department of Transportation Enterprise Business Services Portal.’ Completed portal registration forms should be emailed to GHSPSecurity@ncdot.gov.
