NCDOT Seeks Input on Future Transportation Projects

RALEIGH – The N.C. Department of Transportation is asking the public to provide input on what transportation projects they would like to see included in the N.C. Department of Transportation’s next 10-year transportation plan for 2028-2037.

With a goal of increasing safety, reducing congestion and promoting economic growth, NCDOT uses data and local input to determine which projects get funded in the 10-year State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) based on a specific formula created by the Strategic Transportation Investments law. It allows NCDOT to use its funding more efficiently to enhance North Carolina’s infrastructure, supporting job creation and a higher quality of life.

A statewide public comment period to submit project ideas and other feedback is now open and runs through Friday, Aug. 29. During this period, the public can send project suggestions in a short, interactive online survey or attend one of the weeklong drop-in sessions at NCDOT offices across the state. The online survey and in-person meeting dates can be found on NCDOT’s website.

Projects can be as large-scale as an interstate improvement or as small as a new turn lane or intersection improvement and can be for any of NCDOT’s six modes of transportation – highway, aviation, bicycle and pedestrian, ferry, public transportation and rail. Please note that the comment period is not for maintenance-related projects such as patching potholes, resurfacing or ditches. NCDOT uses a different method to prioritize maintenance projects.

NCDOT will also collect input from local transportation planning organizations and from its own staff throughout the state as it puts together the list of potential projects.

Project scores and a draft list of projects identified for funding at the Statewide Mobility level – the first of three tiers in the project prioritization process – are expected to be released by spring 2026. Additional public comment periods regarding Regional Impact- and Division Needs-level projects will be held later in 2026 year.

The 2028-2037 draft STIP is expected to be released in early 2027, followed by adoption by the Board of Transportation that summer.

NCDOT Seeks Public Input on Draft 10-Year Transportation Plan

RALEIGH – A draft of the state’s next long-range transportation improvements plan is now available for public review.

The State Transportation Improvement Program, or STIP, is the N.C. Department of Transportation’s guide that shows how and when transportation projects are expected to be funded over the next 10 years. Projects scheduled in the first five years are generally considered to be scheduled for delivery, while those on the latter half of the schedule are funded for preliminary engineering only and are subject to be re-evaluated when the next STIP is developed.

A public comment period for the draft STIP for years 2026-2035 is now open and runs through April 4. People can review the document and submit feedback online by visiting www.ncdot.gov. Local NCDOT offices across the state will also hold weeklong drop-in periods in the coming months for the public to ask questions and submit comments in person. More information on the times and locations of those meetings will be posted at www.ncdot.gov once schedules are finalized.

NCDOT typically updates the STIP every two years. The department uses data and local input to determine which projects get funded in the 10-year plan based on a specific formula created by the Strategic Transportation Investments law. This allows NCDOT to use its funding more efficiently to enhance North Carolina’s infrastructure, supporting economic growth, job creation and a higher quality of life.

Transportation officials are expected to adopt the 2026-2035 STIP in summer 2025.

More information on the STIP process can be found on the NCDOT webpage.

NCDOT Seeks Input on Future Transportation Projects

RALEIGH – The N.C. Department of Transportation is identifying projects for its next long-range capital plan and wants citizens to participate in the process.

Public drop-in sessions are set to take place in the 14 highway divisions across the state over the coming weeks. These will be informal gatherings in which citizens can share their interests in transportation projects and ask questions of local NCDOT staff. Locations and times for these meetings can be found on the NCDOT website.

People can also offer their comments via the website or through an interactive online map during the public comment period, which runs June 17 to July 17.Public input is a key component in developing the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), which identifies construction and funding schedules for state transportation projects over a 10-year period. The STIP in development will cover 2026-2035.

Projects included in the STIP are funded in three categories, cascading from Statewide Mobility to Regional Impact to Division Needs. The Statewide Mobility tier selection process is 100% data based. Planning organizations and NCDOT’s 14 Highway Divisions assign local input points that account for 30% of the project scores in the Regional Impact tier and 50% of the Division Needs project scores.

NCDOT released the Statewide Mobility scores and funded projects list on May 24. The Regional Impact funded projects list is expected to be released in late summer/early fall, after the upcoming public comment period. A comment period for the Division Needs phase will be held in the fall and a draft of the 2026-2035 STIP is expected to be released in early 2025.
